An Ordinary Evening - Shloka Shankar

Rain lashed against the pane
and thunder struck hard.
I saw a silhouette of a cat
on the wall in the back alley
and watched the raindrops
peter out the streetlight.

Here I was, taking refuge in
a dilapidated building
of a club, with a glass of
rum and ice cubes,
playing cards with
fellow sharpers.

The rain stopped,
I gathered my winnings,
walked out the door
in triumph and
kicked the black cat
out of sight.
